Have you ever felt that feeling of knowing something but you simply cannot put your hands into it?
Like when you want to say a certain word but the word in itself is at the back of your mind, and you know it, you just need to remember it. That “it’s at the tip of my tongue” sensation?
I was in my fourth year of high school and during one of our exams, there was a part where you needed to identify the right word that would have been appropriate to use in a sentence. I was able to answer everything except for one, during that time I knew that I knew the answer but I could not recall the exact word so I decided that I would skip that part.
Upon finishing the exam, I started talking to one of my classmate who was also able to finish the exam earlier than the time that we were required to do so. While I was conversing with my friend, I got a glimpse at his paper and saw the answer to that one question that I skipped. When I saw his answer I knew that it was the right answer, I was a hundred percent sure.
Afterward, I started contemplating if I should write the correct answer down on my paper but I decided not to. Why? Because I may know that the answer is correct and I could try and justify that the answer was at the back of my mind but still, I got the answer from getting a glimpse on someone else’s paper.
My seatmate will never know what happened that day nor my professor, but I know. Perhaps this is the best part about honesty, while the other traits and values that we have can be apparent to other people, honesty doesn’t have a grandeur effect that people will be able to see when it is being practiced. Most of the time, it is practiced in the shadows of our own hearts but its beauty is that it deals with our hearts most.
Who are we when no one sees us, how honest can we get when no one knows the truth?
